Data-centric micromanufacturing platform towards added value in the health sector
MicroMan4Health pioneers a data-centric micromanufacturing framework for added value in the healthcare/MedTech sector. This shift from process-centric to data-centric micromanufacturing constitutes a paradigm shift in how knowledge, control, and value will be created in micromanufacturing platforms for the health sector. This is driven by rising functionality of healthcare devices demanding digital intelligence, traceability and clinically-relevant performance in micromanufacturing technologies. Since each micromanufacturing process is governed by distinct multiphysics principles and suffers from limited training data, digitalisation cannot rely on a single unified model. This motivates the need for 15 dedicated PhD projects, each addressing a specific micromanufacturing process within a coherent methodological umbrella, as processes at micro/sub-mm scales cannot be fully described by textbook equations and require dedicated research. Therefore, the project brings together 26 partners (Universities and Industries) and integrates more than eight advanced micromanufacturing technologies. Through coordinated research, each DC will (i) develop scientific foundations for digitalised and reconfigurable point-of-care micromanufacturing, (ii) develop data-centric micromanufacturing approaches for MedTech/healthcare use-cases (iii) fabricate next-gen designs of MedTech devices and surfaces from data-centric micromanufacturing platform and perform clinically-relevant tests. The use-cases include implants (cochlear, orthopaedic), neural sensing electrodes, dental prosthesis and gears, drug-delivery micro-carriers, micro-injectors, bone-screws and microfluidic diagnostic devices. MicroMan4Health uses research as a tool to train the next generation of researchers equipped in hybrid skills including experimental micromanufacturing, AI and data-engineering skills, MedTech device fabrication, regulatory awareness, soft skills and intersectoral mobility with leading industries.
