Tandem Catalysts Design towards Efficient Selective Capture and Conversion of CO2
This proposal will develop bifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) catalysts that integrate carbon dioxide (CO2) selective capture and conversion (CO2-SCC) into a single process, avoiding high energy penalties for CO2 compression and sorbent regeneration, kinetic mismatches, and costs of conventional, separate steps. By combining engineered adsorption sites with catalytic species, the catalysts will enable low-temperature, low-pressure hydrogenation with exceptional energy efficiency. An interdisciplinary approach – spanning advanced synthesis, state-of-the-art characterization, and operando mechanistic studies – will deliver fundamental insights into thermally catalyzed CO2-SCC and guide the rational design of future materials. The outcomes will advance scalable, cost-effective CO2 valorization technologies, directly supporting EU Green Deal targets, fostering innovation in sustainable catalysis, and strengthening Europe’s leadership in climate-neutral technologies.
