Ecodesign Doctoral Network
The way domestic and industrial products and their business models are designed will, to a large extent, define the long-term prospects for our planet and the well-being of future generations. In the shorter term, it will also heavily impact the competitiveness and resilience of the EU economy. Therefore, the ECODESIGN Doctoral Network (DN) has a critical mission: to train a new generation of product (eco)design and associated impact-assessment experts. With the recently approved Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the ongoing revision of the End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) directive, as well as the Circular Economy Action plan and Critical Raw Materials Act, the European Commission (EC) has set ambitious ecodesign targets. To support the realisation of these targets, new ecodesign technologies, as well as methods, tools, guidelines, and associated assessment methods, will be investigated for the most precarious product groups containing Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) in the electrical, electronic, and automotive sectors. ECODESIGN DN will consider a holistic, future-oriented full-product lifecycle perspective that accounts for all impacts on Planet, People, and Prosperity (3P) to propose requirements that bridge product, waste, and other horizontal EU policies. For this, ECODESIGN will conduct research into new designs to enhance AI-supported human-robot cooperative reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling (WP1). This will be integrated into ground-breaking, information-exchange technologies in line with the concept of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) (WP2). To assess how the adoption of these designs and technologies will contribute to the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), new methods for assessing environmental (WP3), social (WP4), and economic (WP5) impacts will be developed. Training materials (WP6) will be publicly shared, along with the developed methods and tools, on an online platform (WP7).
