SEamless Integration of image guidance to break down the barrierS and enhance the efficiency of Minimally Invasive and hybrid neurosurgical Care.

SEISMIC aims to create a holistic approach to revolutionize neurosurgical care through seamless integration of minimally invasive surgical approaches and imaging technologies. Despite neurological conditions being the leading cause of global disease burden, minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques lag significantly behind other surgical disciplines. Current clinical procedures rely on large skull openings and fragmented imaging tools that interrupt workflow and compromise precision. Without integrated real-time guidance and minimally invasive technologies, many conditions—hemorrhagic stroke, subdural bleeds and brain tumors—remain high-risk or inaccessible. SEISMIC addresses this urgent gap by uniting a wide and multi-disciplinary consortium, to develop and integrate the next step in minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. SEISMIC will develop and integrate 1) continuous 4D ultrasound guidance with compact X-ray for unobtrusive, real-time guidance; 2) high-fidelity simulation platforms empowering clinician training; 3) non-invasive liquid biopsies that bypass the blood-brain barrier; and 4) minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat lesions without needing large skull openings. These breakthroughs will be validated in four high-impact clinical applications—hemorrhagic stroke, subdural bleeding, tumor diagnosis and tumor treatment—in trials assessing safety, efficacy, scalability and economic viability within a holistic assessment framework. SEISMIC will: 1) shorten procedure times and minimize surgical trauma, reducing complication rates and hospital stays; 2) accelerate recovery and improve long-term outcomes; 3) and extend specialized neurosurgical care into underserved populations. SEISMIC’s structured framework for collaborative development and rapid clinical adoption will transform high-risk, resource-intensive neurosurgeries into safer, faster and more accessible interventions, revolutionizing neurosurgical care across Europe—and beyond. The SEISMIC project operates within a public–private partnership framework, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and policy actors to advance the Neurosurgery field.
