Photovoltaic inverter for Virtualised operation and transformation

This project will develop and demonstrate a next-generation smart multilevel inverter to accelerate PV integration and deliver EUPI-PV outcomes: (i) improved energy yield, (ii) optimal energy use, and (iii) enhanced flexibility and interoperability. Extending the single-phase PUC5 to three-phase medium-voltage systems, the project will design a novel multilevel inverter topology using SiC and GaN devices for higher power density, efficiency and power quality. By developing and implementing advanced control techniques, the inverter will provide synthetic inertia, fast active/reactive current injection, robust ride-through, and anti-islanding functionalities, while minimising EMI. Integrated smart hardware and firmware will include condition and health monitoring, secure communications, automated asset ID and geolocation to enable Digital Twins (DT) and real-time PV data models for predictive monitoring and optimal dispatch. EMC/EMI mitigation, common-mode leakage management, cybersecurity, recyclability and lifecycle guidance are core to the design. Interactions among multiple inverters and the distribution grid will be validated with CHIL/PHIL and multi-point testing to inform controls and standards. The result is a compact, future-proof, and high-efficiency inverter solution, positioned as a strong alternative to conventional full-bridge inverters and a direct enabler of Europe’s clean energy transition and global technology leadership.
