PHOENIX

Abstract The PHOENIX programme is primed to solve the significant technical, safety, certification and industrialisation challenges associated with pumping LH2 in aviation and those identified by the UK Government’s Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) FlyZero programme and subsequent “Destination Zero” strategy. The project delivers a prototype demonstration in LN2 of a LH2 fuel pump system (actuation, pump, valves and sensing) with key technology maturity advances and systems integration. LH2 fuel pumping is a key technology enabler for the use of cryogenic hydrogen for aerospace applications as showcased in the ATI FlyZero vision. Primary application is for a Fuel-Cell Powered regional/short range aircraft (or Hydrogen Electric Propulsion (HEP)) such as the Airbus ZEROe concept, with wider applicability to other aircraft sizes and to Hydrogen Combustion (HC) powered aircraft. The academic partners bring specialist liquid hydrogen pump and leak detection expertise and knowledge to the project. Over the course of the programme, the program will further support acceleration of technology development through research council-funded open calls for innovation and by feeding requirements into the SME supply chain.
