Deleuze, altered states and film
| Abstract | Asserting that the 'brain is the screen'; Gilles Deleuze suggests that the brain is itself a kind of moving image and that cinema expresses and induces thought. Drawing on Deleuze's film-philosophy, I analyse cinematic techniques that stimulate perception and extend consciousness in the viewer. I map the film experience as an altered state of consciousness via mainstream film like Donny Darko as well as art house classics. I argue that Deleuze's aesthetics of altered-cultural writers like Carlo Castaneda. |
