Green processing technology platform for development of high-performance, smart, sustainable packaging
| Abstract | The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most heavily dependent on plastic for meeting its packaging requirements due to the material's considerably low cost and lack of chemical reactivity. This has resulted in a global waste problem with 150 million tonnes of single-use plastic waste ending up in the waste stream for incineration every year. Currently, the processes through which the polymers are synthesised, manufactured and treated at the end-of-life are either not green or fit-for-purpose, presenting a huge challenge in the uptake of sustainable packaging during the dynamic landscape of environmental regulations. This project aims to address that by developing methods using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) to make packaging manufacturing and processing green. We aim to involve stakeholders across the entire supply as well as regulatory authorities in the process to make it inclusive and to obtain best outcome that would ensure adoption of greener packaging solutions. This study will examine the versatility of scCO2 as a green processing technology platform. Aspects that will be investigated include: * Decontamination/sterilisation to prevent migration of pharmaceutical actives and/or build-up of undesirable compounds during lifecycle and reuse of packaging material. * Shelf-life enhancement using sustainable feedstock and smart polymer packaging technology. * Supporting semi-continuous production and scaling up processes by coupling up with next generation measurement capabilities. * Replacement of conventional, toxic solvents in polymer synthesis. The proposed collaborative research will focus on providing novel alternative packaging solutions whilst encouraging circular economy. The resulting green processing technology platform will reduce environmental impact and accelerate the uptake of sustainable packaging alternatives. |
